A Girl and Her Sheep
For this second piece I used the image of my mom in the 1950s with her sheep. I still wanted to place the image in a surreal or abstract environment with less reference to a landscape than Doom Cow to emphasize the disconnect from our food as well as incorporate a piece of my family's heritage. I found that when I was stitching onto the cardboard it began to warp badly so for this piece I used a canvas however I still used the same techniques in pouring paint onto wet gesso, wintergreen ink transfer, charcoal and stitching with twine. Compositionally I feel like I resolved some of the uses in the charcoal clouds however I am not as happy with the texture since the surface is canvas. It was much harder to apply the charcoal especially since I had applied a layer of matte medium over the ink transfer. I am also unhappy with the placement of the ink transfer. I think it would have worked better if placed at the top of the canvas in order to avoid the harsh line.
